Setting Item Attributes and State Flags

RC-WinTrans supplies additional information about the current state of each translation unit using what are known as "state flags" and "item attributes."  These attributes assist the user in designating, locating, and sorting items to simplify the translation process.

Item states range from "new" to "final," and can be changed manually by the user.  The item state usually refers to the state of the translation unit's target element (target text), but there are some states which reflect the state of the source element (e.g., "new" and "changed source").

Item attributes indicate special circumstances for a translation unit, such as "excluded from translation" or "locked"; they are set manually by the user.

Attributes and state flags are set/changed as follows:

1.

Edit Menu

The Edit menu contains all the commands for setting attributes and state flags (Figure 1).  The selected command will be applied to the item(s) currently selected in the Text Table view.

NOTE:  The state of an item with no target text cannot be changed.  A new state can only be defined for items that have translations.

Item State Toolbar

Most attributes and state flags can also be set with the appropriate toolbar button from the Item State toolbar (Figure 2).  The selected command will be applied to the item(s) currently selected in the Text Table view.

Text Table View  (STATE FLAGS ONLY)

The state of a single item can be set in the Text Table view by double-clicking on the item in the "State" column.  This activates a combo-box in the column where you can select the item's state.

NOTES:

1.

The combo-box in the "State" column (Text Table view) lists all the state flags defined in the XLIFF standard.  Only the most frequently-used state flags can be set via the Edit menu and the Item State toolbar.

2.

Attributes and state flags can be set for a number of items at once.  Simply select the items (multiple-selection) in the Text Table view, then use the appropriate command to set the attribute or state.

3.

The state of an item with no target text cannot be changed.  A new state can only be defined for items that have translations.

4.

Automatic state changes.  RC-WinTrans automatically changes the state of a target element (translation text) under the following circumstances:

a.

If a translation is entered or an existing translation is edited in the Translation Edit bar, the state of the item will be set to "translated."

b.

The RC-WinTrans update process automatically sets the state of a target element (translation text) to "changed source" when the source text has changed (in the source file).

c.

The update process automatically sets the state of a translation unit to "new" after it has been added to the project (newly added to the source file).
