Multiple Translation Units (Trados)

Trados-related topic

Multiple translation units with the same source text can be added to a Trados™ translation memory (TM) so long as this capability is supported by the TM.  RC-WinTrans can add a new translation unit (TU) to the TM when the target segment differs but the source segment is identical to that of a TU already existing in the TM.

The option for adding a new TU when the source segment is the same and the target segment is different is disabled by default to avoid unnecessary duplications in the translation memory.  To enable the option, right-click on the Trados TM entry in the Dictionaries view and select the Properties command in the local menu that appears.  The Add new translation unit when target segments differ option can be found in the dialog box that is opened.

TIP: When searching for (and importing) translations, the find match value needs to be set to 99% or less but never to 100%.  This is because when multiple translation units with the same source text are found, the match value returned by the Translator's Workbench is 99% or less.

Guidelines for Adding Multiple Translation Units

1.

If the Add new translation unit when target segments differ option is ENABLED, RC-WinTrans will add a TU to a TM as a new translation unit (in addition to (an) existing one(s)).

2.

If the Add new translation unit when target segments differ option is DISABLED, the translation of an existing TU will be overwritten, but ONLY if there is just one (TU); if more than one TU exists for a source text then these will NOT be overwritten.
