Hotkey Suggestion Page

The Hotkeys – Suggestion and Conflict Resolution page (shown in the Extended View bar- see figure below) can be used instead of or in addition to the Hotkey Suggestion dialog box to choose and insert hotkeys and/or to resolve hotkey errors that have been detected by RC-WinTrans.

Open the dialog box by selecting the Hotkey Suggestion Page command from the Checks menu.

Commands/Elements

Translation Units List

The Translation Units list contains all the translation units of the group to which the currently selected item belongs. Hotkeys within a group must be unique (e.g., each menu item within a group must have a unique hotkey).

–	"Source" Column The source text of the selected translation unit (dialog box or menu item).
–	"Target" Column The target text (translation) of the selected dialog box or menu item. Changes made to the target text (hotkey changes) are accepted by clicking on the Save button.
–	"Current Hotkey" Column The hotkey used in the target text (translation).
–	"Suggested Hotkey" Column A suggested hotkey will appear when the source text has a hotkey but the current target text does not. Click on the Accept selected button to use the suggested hotkey.
–	"Conflict" Column Denotes conflicts with a red "X" symbol. The red "X" symbol indicates that a hotkey (a character) is used more than once within a group. The translation units (here: the list entries) that use the same hotkey are assigned a "conflict number" (shown next to the red "X" mark) to indicate which items are in conflict with one other. For example, in the figure above the conflict number "1" has been assigned to two items using the same hotkey "R."

Hotkey Drop-Down List

Use the drop-down list to select a hotkey. The drop-down list contains a list of possible hotkeys for the currently selected item's target text.

Target Edit Field

Displays the target text of the currently selected translation unit. The translation's hotkey can be specified manually by editing the target text (setting the ampersand (&) character). Apply changes by clicking on the Apply button to the right of the field.

Apply Button

Applies changes made to the target text in the Target field.

Accept selected Button

Accepts the suggested hotkey (in the "Suggested Hotkey" column) for the currently selected translation unit.

Accept All Button

Accepts all suggested hotkeys (in the "Suggested Hotkey" column).

Save Button

Saves any changes that have been made.

TIP/NOTE: Translating Hotkeys/Accelerator Keys

For all European and Middle Eastern languages, a "native" hotkey is assigned. For example, the "&File" menu is "&Datei" in German, "&Arquivo" in Brazilian, "&Arkiv" in Swedish, and "&Dosya" in Turkish.

For East Asian languages, the English hotkeys are kept and added to the translation. For example, the "&File" menu is "ファイル" ("&F") in Japanese. This was done because there are so many different input layouts for each of these languages and the only thing you are sure of is that the user will have some access to ASCII key values of a – x.

The thing to remember is hotkeys were designed to make the user's life easier. If you choose a key that may not be accessible or that is hard to get to, you are defeating its whole purpose for being there.
